Beyond the Hundredth Meridian: John Wesley Powell and the Second Opening of the West, Wallace Stegner--Pretty good. I really enjoyed the account of Powell's first run down the Colorado, but the accounts of his second and third journeys are significantly less interesting, and so are the middle years when Powell was doing his Native American anthropological studies.
